Tidal restrictions at Paremata Bridge
Another project for which we sought funding under the Village Programme related to removing tidal restrictions under the Northern end of the rail bridge at Paremata. Much valuable work is currently being carried out by the PCC and other councils to reduce adverse impacts on the harbour under the Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour and Catchment Strategy and Action Plan. In particular, much effort is being made to restrict the entry of sediment into the harbour to reduce the rate of infilling and extend the life of the harbour. Another way to reduce in-filling is to improve tidal flows, and we believe that a relatively simple and inexpensive project for the Pauatahanui Inlet would be to remove the large boulders and concrete pathway under the rail bridge and restore the tidal flow by replacing them with a walkway on poles. Our latest advice was that our proposal had been referred to the Harbours Programme for consideration for funding in their 2015/16 budget.
